KrateCMS lets you generate a featured image for any post without leaving the editor. Powered by OpenAI’s image generation models, the tool turns a plain-text prompt into a ready-to-use image that is automatically attached to your post and stored in your site’s cloud storage.

Opening the image generator

You can generate a featured image when creating a new post or editing an existing one.
1

Open the post editor

Go to Posts in the admin sidebar, then click New Post to create one, or click the title of an existing post to open it for editing. The editor is available at /admin/posts/create for new posts and /admin/posts/{slug}/edit for existing ones.
2

Find the Featured Image section

Scroll down past the main content area to the Featured Image section in the post editor sidebar.
3

Click the AI generate button

Click the Generate with AI button (or similar label) to open the image generation interface. A prompt field appears where you can describe the image you want.
4

Enter your prompt

Type a description of the image. Be as specific as possible — include the subject, visual style, color palette, and mood for best results.
A minimalist flat-design illustration of a rocket launching, blue and purple gradient background, clean vector style
5

Generate and review

Click Generate. The AI produces an image based on your prompt, which previews immediately in the Featured Image section. If you are not satisfied with the result, click Regenerate to try again with the same prompt or update your description first.
6

Save the post

Once you are happy with the image, save or publish your post. The generated image is automatically set as the featured image and stored in your tenant’s cloud storage.

Writing effective prompts

The quality of the generated image depends heavily on how clearly you describe what you want. Vague prompts produce generic results; specific prompts produce images that fit your content.
Include three key elements in every prompt: the subject (what the image shows), the style (illustration, photograph, flat design, etc.), and the mood or color palette (warm tones, dark and moody, bright and minimal). For example: “A cozy home office desk with a laptop and coffee mug, warm afternoon light, photorealistic style.”

Prompt examples by content type

A person reading a book in a sunny library, soft natural lighting, warm color tones, editorial photography style
Abstract representation of a brain connected to a network of glowing nodes, dark background, blue and white, digital art style

What to avoid

Prompts like “success” or “technology” give the AI too little to work with and produce generic stock-photo results. Add concrete visual details — objects, settings, styles — to guide the output.
Mixing incompatible styles (e.g., “photorealistic watercolor illustration”) can produce inconsistent results. Pick one primary style and stick to it.
AI image models do not reliably render readable text or accurate logos. If you need text in your featured image, add it in a separate image editor after generating the base image.

Uploading your own image instead

If you prefer to use a custom image rather than generating one, you can upload directly from the same Featured Image section. Click the upload option, select a file from your computer, and it will be stored in your tenant’s cloud storage and set as the featured image — the same as a generated image.

Storage and reuse

Generated images are stored in your tenant’s cloud storage automatically. You do not need to download and re-upload them. Each generated image is tied to the post it was created for — if you need the same image on another post, generate a new one using the same prompt or upload the downloaded file manually.
AI image generation availability depends on your plan and site configuration. If the Generate with AI button does not appear in the Featured Image section, contact your site administrator to check whether the feature is enabled for your account.
